Certified Medical Coders (CCA - Certified Coding Associate)
translate clinical data from patient health records and assign appropriate medical codes. The medical coding is
then submitted to insurance companies for payment purposes, data collection, research, billing and quality improvement
purposes.
Medical Coding plays an important role in the financial success of private medical practices and other health care
facilities. The better expertise of the Medical Coder in identifying relevant diagnoses for patient encounters,
the greater the insurance reimbursement to the employer! That’s why employers today demand CCAs with a medical
certification – because certified medical coding specialists are knowledgeable and have the skills and training
needed to help their practices make more money!
Certified
Medical Billers (CMCP - Certified Medical Claims Professional) assemble, organize
and evaluate medical records and charts for completeness and accuracy. They ensure that all forms are properly
identified, signed and that all necessary information is in the computer. Once all of the relevant data is correctly
assembled, the Medical Billing Specialist then bills the insurance company or Federal Government for the services
and goods rendered while treating the patient.
Clearly, Medical Billing is a vital part of a private practice or hospital environment. Medical Billing is the
department responsible for making sure payments are made by insurance companies and that cash-flow is maintained.
Without this function there is no practice or hospital!
Medical Billing professionals can also be referred to as Medical Reimbursement Specialists or Health Insurance
Specialists.
Certified or Registered Medical Transcriptionists (CMT or RMT)*
follow prescribed and established document formats, and transcribe or convert recorded dictations by physicians
and/or other healthcare professionals into a written text. These documents are the primary mechanism by which physicians,
hospitals, and other medical professionals communicate patient record information with other physicians, insurance
companies, etc. The CMT/RMT also edits dictated material for grammar, spelling, punctuation and clarity. |
